The designer sketched the basic idea for the press on a napkin, which Alessi finally put into practice in 1990. The gold-plated version was described as an "ornament" because citric acid from fruit would discolor and erode the gold plating.

A citrus squeezer as revolutionary as it is, is a surprisingly functional design in simplistic form by Philippe Starck on a pizzeria napkin during a seaside holiday in Italy. But anyways: This piece of art from the school of anti functionality looks really sharp in your showcase, just as it does at the MoMa/NYC. Starck's designs are frequently mysterious in their ambiguity—their purpose is not always at once identifiable. Made from a mirror polished and durable aluminium, its long, spider-like legs are tall enough to fit your glass underneath - ready to collect your lemon, orange or lime juice.But this luxury version came with instructions warning that the juicer should never be used with actual fruit, because the finish would corrode.

It is the most controversial squeezer of the century I must say, but one of the most amusing projects I have done in my career. Well, it turns out that the design is really not all that practical, despite Starck’s original intent.The pressed aluminium body of the juice squeezer breathes a 60s inspired stylized spacecraft design. The kitchen tool is not dishwasher-safe, and must be washed by hand, while taking care to avoid injury from its sharp point. It was a mathematical exercise of reverse topography, turning concave into convex,first for mental workout and game and then for cleaning purposes.

It is this ability to challenge norms and think outside the box that has made Alessi a trendsetter in the design industry. They started on the left, and as they worked their way over to the right, they took on the unmistakable shape of what was to become the juicy salif.This distinctive elongated shape is inspired by the shape of a squid, which came to Starck when squeezing lemon juice over some calamari in a pizzeria whilst on holidays in Italy. Designed in 1990, the design for the controversial kitchen utensil was sketched onto a pizzeria napkin by Stark whilst dining on holiday in Italy. One of the hallmarks of Alessi's design philosophy is its attention to detail and the use of high-quality materials.
