About this deal

I won't read all the books/stories in this collection, but I need a place to corral all my reviews, and this is as good a place as any. The earliest textual witness for the novel, bearing the Thunderball name and annotated by the author. James Bond is targeted for elimination by SMERSH, and the malevolent Colonel Rosa Klebb has set a trap in Istanbul.

Vintage 007 James Bond Collection Ian Fleming 14 Books Set (Casino Royal, Live And Let Die, Moon Raker, Diamonds Are Forever, From Russia With Love, Dr No, Gold Finger, For Your Eyes Only, The Spy Who Loved Me, The Man With The Golden Gun Paperback – 1 Jan. Schøyen's private collection of manuscripts, which span all cultures and all time periods, is one of the largest and most comprehensive of its kind. The first in the long list of James Bond literary series authors was Kingsley Amis, who wrote under the pseudonym of Robert Markham. This copy was given from the author's own batch of copies for presentation in December 1963 (the book having been published in November 1963). I was pleased to see how the books evolved and understand why Ian Fleming regretted "the spy who loved me" and asked to make a fully original story for the film. The work is based on Japanese material Fleming gathered on a five-week foreign jaunt on behalf of the Sunday Times. Ownership signatures to The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only; endpapers of The Man with the Golden Gun with some rubs/scuffs; toning to spine of From Russia, With Love, some chips to spine ends of jackets (moreso to earlier titles). Featuring a fascinating introduction by Val McDermid and new illustrations by Juan Esteban Rodríguez, each copy has been signed by both the introducer and the illustrator. This is a wonderful association copy: the recipient was his friend Anthony Kemsley (later to become Sir Anthony Berry), the youngest son of Viscount Kemsley, a significant figure in Fleming's life. I was really curious to know if there was some big influence on the success of the series since is so fast and easy read.

Despite being something of a blithe anachronism, a throwback to a time when spies dressed for dinner and crude racial stereotypes were socially acceptable, 007 projected an image of Western intelligence services as a noble-band of decisive and courageous patriots, fighting an enemy in the Soviet Union, that possessed a kind of wanton, undiscriminating belligerence" (Moran, p. Goldfinger was the one closest to the book, but even that departed from the source material in spots. The significance of the events at school only come to light in the course of an adventure that takes James across Europe and puts him within range of a warmongering villain. The books have shiny covers (as opposed to the matt editions) which makes them slightly better wearing and the print quality is good.

As James Bond follows his trail, he discovers that Goldfinger’s real game is the heist of fifteen billion dollars of US government bullion.
