About this deal

Raising the Dead: The Production Logistics – 20 minute feature with contributions from Michael Gornick, Christine Forrest, John Amplas and Tom Dubensky. Some German releases also included a fourth version of the film, entitled The Ultimate Cut which combined footage from all three versions, as well as a featurette detailing its creation (but this is not considered an official release by anyone associated with the production). Teal becomes dominate once settled in the mall, driving the color to a strict, almost monochrome tone indoors. This and 28 Days Later were also responsible for a minor trend of fast-moving zombies, which is now all but abandoned, especially after the success of The Walking Dead and its spin-offs.

Unfortunately, it’s all in service of characters that you frankly don’t care whether they live or die. The rest of the extras consist of material produced for Universal’s DVD and Blu-ray releases, including several featurettes, a non-optional introduction by Zack Snyder, and a set of four side-by-side Storyboard Comparisons. There is a slight drop in quality with the extended material, due to its differing source, it’s slightly softer, colours aren’t quite so robust and the black level is lighter, but it is marginal and easily forgotten. What makes Dawn of the Dead (the remake) so good is that it doesn’t try to EMULATE the original Romero film, but neither does it stray too far from that base.

There’s also a section on the influence of his films, including amusing clips from spoofs, such as Night of the Giving Head. This was part of the agreement made, as Argento’s company financed much of the film and he felt some tweaks would need to be made for non-American markets. Dynamics: I’m not sure as there were no notes in the press release or on the packaging, but I think the audio here is the same that was available on the Blu-ray release. In setting the film in a mall and watching how possessive and corrupted the characters get over their horde of ‘stuff’, Romero adds a healthy dose of satire surrounding consumerism.

Disc 2 presents the 139-minute Extended “Cannes” Cut, also sourced from a native 4K scan of the original camera negative along with an additional 4K scan of the Extended Cut color reversal internegative.Sarah Polley (Splice), Jake Weber (Wendigo), Mekhi Phifer (Divergent) and Ty Burrell (Modern Family). Raising the Dead goes over the nuts and bolts of the production with Michael Gornick, Christine Forrest, and Tom Dubensky. With a great balance of satire, action and horror, it transcends any minor flaws it may have, to more than justify its lofty status in the pantheon of genre movies. Now brought up in conversations as one of the better horror remakes alongside John Carpenter’s The Thing, David Cronenberg’s The Fly, and Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Zack Snyder’s (and to a large degree, James Gunn’s) Dawn of the Dead is a completely different beast than Romero’s, and depending upon who you ask, its modern-day equal.
