About this deal

Much has been written about Deller over the decades but this is the first time he has pulled together all of his cultural touchstones. A holistic and revealing account of the inspirations, passions and practices of one of the country’s foremost contemporary artists.

In Art is Magic , Turner Prize - winning artist Jeremy Deller brings together for the first time key works from his career alongside the art, pop music, film, politics and history that have inspired him. Well, I’m 57, so I’m getting on now, but you have to be open and be a sponge to some degree to be an artist, whatever age you are. The book features work from across Deller’s life and art and includes Sacrilege, the inflatable Stonehenge, the Iggy Pop Life Class, The Battle of Orgreave, a recreation of a confrontation from the Miners’ Strike, bats (a subject in at least three of Deller’s works), Andy Warhol (whom he met in 1986), rave culture, hen harriers pecking out the eyes of a Tory MP, and a giant Chameleon slide. One of the most intriguing images in the book is a photograph of Street in full glam mode – platinum blond tresses, mascara, lipstick, tight shiny trousers and top, platform boots – posing next to his father and fellow workmates at the pithead of Brynmawr colliery in 1973.The former, entitled Sacrilege, played host to children and ravers at various outdoor sites until it collapsed from wear and tear during a tour of Australia. Just like the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony, this book shows the full breadth of Englishness, with all its challenges, and embraces them. He describes the rural acid-house raves of the late 80s, which he explored in his film Everybody in the Place, as “Dionysian and Bacchic”.

We will be happy to offer you a full refund, replacement or exchange on any items excluding custom prints, Goldfinger + Tate furniture, face coverings and pierced earrings. I saw his ‘Joy in People’ show at the Hayward and bounced on ‘Sacrilege’, his inflatable replica of Stonehenge, when it opened in Glasgow in 2012. I do, yes,” he says, nodding, when we sit down to chat amid the organised clutter of the office of his flat overlooking north London’s Holloway Road, where he does most of his thinking and planning. The book features work from across Deller's life and art and includes Sacrilege, the inflatable Stonehenge, the Iggy Pop Life Class , The Battle of Orgreave , a recreation of a confrontation from the Miners' Strike, bats (a subject in at least three of Deller's works), Andy Warhol (whom he met in 1986), rave culture, hen harriers pecking out the eyes of a Tory MP, and a giant Chameleon slide. Receiving no public funding, the RA depends on the continuing generosity of our supporters and Friends. In conversation with Sorcha Carey, curator of the next Folkestone Triennial, Deller will discuss 30 years of his conceptual art, as well as his interests in politics, music and folk culture. Much of Deller's work is collaborative; it has a strong political aspect, in the subjects dealt with and also the devaluation of artistic ego through the involvement of other people in the creative process. A parallel memorial to the Vietnamese civilians who died in the conflict will be built, that imitates the form of Lin’s with the names of the 2 million dead.

He swallowed the whole project and still believes what he was taught there, whereas I had to unlearn everything. It’s also a beautiful book, using full bleed images, colour, layering and typography to support the original work and tell a new story that makes sense of the journey.
